US Congressman. He apprenticed in his father's leather manufacturing business in Newark, New Jersey as a youth, and upon reaching adult entered into the business as a full partner. Much of his trade supplied leather goods to the American South, and the business suffered greatly when the Civil War came about. He was elected to the New Jersey State Legislature in 1861, and was a staunch Unionist and supported of President Abraham Lincoln's polices in a body that frequently voiced opposition against measures to defeat Southern secession. In 1862 President Lincoln appointed him United States Assessor of Internal Revenue for the state; a position he held until removed by President Andrew Johnston in 1866. Later that year he ran as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, and defeated Democrat Robert Gilchrist for the seat. He served from March 1867 to March 1869, and was defeated for re-election in 1868 by incumbent Jersey City, New Jersey Mayor Orestes Cleveland. However, two years later, the two opponents again ran for the 5th District seat, and George Armstrong Halsey won this time over Congressman Cleveland. He served his second term from March 1871 to March 1872, and declined to run for a third term. He returned to his leather manufacturing business in Newark, and passed away there in 1894.
