SMITH, EDWARD L. – Age, 23 years. Enlisted, September 4, 1864, at Preble, to serve one year; mustered in as private, Co. F, September 25, 1864; mustered out with company, May 30, 1865, near Washington, D. C.

THE CORTLAND DEMOCRAT: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1907

Homer, Dec. 4 – At his home on South Main-st., Nov. 28, Edward L. Smith died of heart disease after an illness of about three weeks which had not been severe. Mr. Smith was 57 (?) years of age and had been in robust health, being employed by the Carriage Goods Co. at Cortland. He was a native of Smithville and had been twice married. He was a veteran of the Civil war, being a member of the 185th N. Y. regiment, Co. F. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Bird Hyer and Mrs. Wm. Bort of Cortland, and two sons Fred of Taylor and Willis of Cortland. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from his home and at the First M. E. church at Cortland at 3 o’clock. Burial at Cortland.
