COTTER, Iowa -- William C. Peters, 82, of Cotter died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Services are at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. The Rev. Dave Stoufer will officiate. Burial will be at the Columbus City Cemetery with military rites.

He was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Cotter, the son of Omrie and Venice Bell Peters. He married Edna E. Thrasher Oct. 30, 1948, in Burlington.

He served with the Naval Sea Bees Battalion from 1940-1945.

He owned and operated Peters Welding and Blacksmith and also worked for the Rath Packing Company for 10 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Columbus City; the KAABA Shrine of Davenport, where he was a 32nd degree shriner; and a member of the Columbus Junction American Legion Post No. 100.

He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, fishing and canning vegetables.

He liked to give gifts to friends that he made from iron.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, a daughter, five grandchildren, two brothers, Kenneth Peters and wife Velma of Columbus Junction and Robert 'Bob' Peters and wife Elaine of Davenport; two sisters, Pauline Breneman of Columbus Junction and Lillian Fisher of Columbus Junction and Cotter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Keith Peters.
