Edna Muriel Thompson, 93, of Clearbrook, Minn., died on Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook with Rev. Genelle Netland officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery in Clearbrook. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted the family with arrangements.

She was born on Sept. 13, 1913, to Nels and Louise Fredensberg in Gonvick, Minn. She spoke only Norwegian until entering the first grade in Gonvick. She loved sports. While in school, and with the help of her father on the school board, the board authorized the first Gonvick High School girls' basketball team. She played with that team until she graduated from Gonvick High School in 1931. She continued her love of sports being a fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and occasionally staying up late at night to catch a rebroadcast of a Minnesota Gophers men's basketball game.

After graduating from high school, she attended McIntosh Normal Training School. She then taught first through eighth grade at the Lien School located a few miles west of Gonvick. She lived in Gonvick and walked to work each day. In the winter she had to arrive at school early so that she could start the wood stove to warm the building for her students. After two years, she left to attend Moorhead State College. After college, she taught school in Warren and Winona, Minn.

In June 1941, she married Raymond Thompson in Gonvick. The couple then moved to Richmond, Calif., before returning to live in Clearbrook in 1946 after her husband and father-in-law bought the Clearbrook Lumber Yard. She raised a family and did some substitute teaching. While supporting her husband in his long battle with cancer, she learned how to operate a lumber business. It was not uncommon to see her piling lumber or doing any other task that needed to be done. After her husband died in 1968, she continued to operate the business until other members of the family later joined her. She continued to work at the business until well into her 80s.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She served on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher and Bible study group leader. She volunteered at Good Samaritan Center and was named an "Outstanding Senior Citizen of Clearwater County."

She liked to travel, including a trip to Israel and multiple trips to Norway to sightsee and visit family. She liked to attend high school sporting events and grandchildren's activities, and enjoyed supporting family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Phillip) Johnson and Kathryn (Jerry) Westrum, both of Clearbook; sons, Brent Thompson of Bloomington, Michael (Susan) Thompson of Clearbrook and Paul (Cathy) Thompson of Bemidji; sister Gudrun Fredensberg of Bemidji; one brother-in-law; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and an infant brother.
