When James arrived in Vietnam 27 June 1968, he was assigned to the 575th Transportation Detachment, A Troop, 3rd Squadron, 7th Calvary, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV.
James was a passenger aboard a UH-10 #66-16033, when a flare accidently ignited in the helicopter cabin causing the helicopter to explode in mid-air and crash 14 kilometers east of Cam Duoc. James died as a result of bodily injury due to the explosion or upon the helicopter impact with the ground.
Survived by his parents, James Perry and Stella Marie Gheer of Springfield, Oregon.
