Artist. He is best remembered for his unusual painting technique, the “Aberli Manner”. First, he would completely draw the landscape, and then paint the scene with oils or watercolors to bring it alive with colors. Although he was imitated by many other artists, his primary student was Samuel Hieronymus Grimm. In 1741 he moved to Berne, Switzerland to study drawing from instructor Johann Grimm. In 1747, he became the instructor at this school of drawing. In 1759 he visited the Bernese Oberland with other artists such as Emanuel Handmann, Christian Georg Schetz, and Friedrich Wilhelm Hirt, and in the same year, he traveled to Paris with Adrian Zingg. After nine months, he returned to Berne, where his paintings had become very popular, particularly with foreign travelers. Although he painted a few portraits and did engravings, he was one of the first artists to portray serene landscapes of Switzerland's lakes and medieval ruins. His favorite subjects were the Aare Valley and views of Swiss lakes. There is still a demand for his paintings. In 2000, one of his paintings sold at Christie’s of London for $1,055.
