John Linton Prock, age 88, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was born November 27, 1920, in Paris, Texas, to Folsom Cleo and Ester Belle Prock. After graduating from Paris High School, John became an Optician's Assistant for Dr. S.R. Lawrence.

In 1940, John enlisted in the Texas National Guard, "T Patch" in Paris, Texas. The unit was mobilized and assigned to the 36th Infantry Division of the United States Army and trained at Camp Bowie, Texas. John chose to serve his country in a medical detachment as a Medical Technician. During World War II, John supervised medical technicians in the care and treatment of soldiers. He kept records of supplies and casualties, as well as instructed new medical technicians in emergency medical treatment. John supervised 113 men as platoon sergeant, rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant. He fought in the battles and campaigns of Naples - Foggia, Rome - Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. While in service, John received the Combat Medical Badge, a Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and five Bronze Stars. John was present when the 36th Infantry Division captured Hermann Goering, Commander of the German Air Force Luftwaffe. After faithfully serving his country for the duration of World War II, John returned home, and was Honorably Discharged for the United States Army in July of 1945.

John continued his career in the medical field, studying to become a dispensing optician. In 1947 he married Helen Rosella Jennings (deceased February 25, 2003). They had one daughter, Linda Kay, born on April 26, 1951. In 1966, John teamed with Lyn Lile to form Lile and Prock Optical Service. They continued their business until 1985, when John retired.

John was an avid member of the YMCA and for many years would walk through the doors of the Bill Bartley YMCA branch at the same time every day to walk and enjoy the hot tub. John maintained this seven (7) day a week routine until May 2009.

During his adult life, John served on the Board of Directors at 1st Presbyterian Church, Wichita Falls, on the founding committee for Presbyterian Manor, Wichita Falls, as well as on the American Board of Opticians, the Dispensers Association and as a founding member of the National Academy of Opticianry.

John is survived by his daughter, Linda Kay Taylor and husband, Don of Perdido Key, Fla.; granddaughter Karen Renee' Snyder of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter, Angela Yvonne Conrad of Humble, Texas; great-granddaughter, Daryn Conrad and great-grandson, Braeden Conrad, both of Humble, Texas.

Honorary pallbearers are Charles Bultena, Brandon Brown, Mike Compton, Kevin Rutledge and Don Taylor.

Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday in the Crestview Memorial Park Chapel with services immediately following. Dr. Isaac Butterworth, pastor First Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
