Rev. Warren Hamby was the son of Rev. Charles Pinkney Hamby and Louie Ann Williams Hamby. His mother was from the Bridgeport, Alabama area where she was a schoolteacher and postmistress. His father was a Methodist pastor and evangelist, like many of his relatives, both ancestors and descendants.

Warren joined the navy in 1942 and served on the USS New York in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. After a brief marriage during the navy to Doris James, he finished his service after the war was over. Then went back to finish high school at Millport. He later went to Birmingham-Southern College where he met his beloved wife, Mary Farr Stone, who spent her vocational life as a piano teacher. He went to Candler School of Theology at Emory University for seminary and was ordained in the Methodist Church. He received a Masters of Sacred Theology degree from Boston University and went back to Emory University for his Doctor of Ministry degree.

He served Graysville, Midway-Docena, Locust Grove (North Georgia), Mulga, Sulligent, Alberta, Hartselle First, Trinity in Huntsville, Galloway Memorial (Jackson, Mississippi), Huffman, the Florence District, and the Board of Global Ministries as a field service fundraiser. He retired in 1989.

Uncle Warren had a winsome personality and wit, filled with humor even in his later years when he had difficulty talking because of his stroke. He was an excellent orator and an inspiration to many. He was pastor of Trinity in Huntsville during its years of dramatic growth. He courageously took a stand during the Civil Rights movement while at Galloway Memorial in Jackson.

His children are Warren Candler Hamby, Jr., Barbara Beth Hamby, Jan Lee Hamby, and Michael Marvin Hamby. The Reverend Dr. Warren C. Hamby, Sr., died Tuesday, June 9, 2009. After a private burial, the family will have a memorial service at First Methodist Church, Sylacauga, AL on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 1:00 o'clock.
Dr. Hamby was 84 years old. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He held four degrees from three colleges and universities, the last of which was a Doctor of Ministry from Emory University. He served more than fifty years of ministry, most of which was with the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, including four years in the Mississippi Conference and ten years with the General Board of Global Ministries. He was author of two books, Eight Keys to Happiness and Winds of Change.
The United Methodist churches he served were Graysville, Midway-Docena, Mulga-Oak Grove, Sulligent, Alberta City in Tuscaloosa, Harselle First, Trinity in Huntsville, Galloway Memorial in Jackson, Mississippi, and Huffman in Birmingham. His ministry also included five years as Superintendent of the Florence District and ten years with the Office of Finance and Field Service, General Board of Global Ministries. Reverend Hamby always stood and spoke for what was right, often at great personal sacrifice.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mary Farr Stone Hamby; four children, Warren Jr. of Alabaster, Mrs. Frank Adkins (Barbara) of Harpersville, Mrs. Ed Piper (Jan) of Bartow, Florida, Michael of Childersburg; and three grandsons, Chan Stone of Birmingham, Drew Piper of Auburn, and Lee Hamby of Alabaster.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Sylacauga First United Methodist Church or any of the churches previously served by Dr. Hamby.
