Herbert Franklin Ridgley was born in Mansfield, IL, August 4, 1890 to John G. and Fannie Spear Ridgley. The family moved to Monticello in 1892 until 1900 when they moved to the Ridgley Farm near White Heath. He attended the Camp Creek School, in 1908 and later attended Browns Business College in Decatur, where he graduated in Jan. 10, 1910. Herbert then returned to the farm and helped his father until September 1910, then taking a position as bookkeeper in the State Bank at Cisco, IL. In April 1912 he again returned to the farm to help his father.

On Jan. 22, 1913, he married Bliss L. Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Young of Cisco, IL, whom he met while in the Bank. They moved to his father's farm near Cerro Gordo, Il. They rented farms for several years, moving finally to Casner on his Uncle Will Ridgley's farm.

While living at Casner, their first child, William Robert, was born. He only lived a few days due to a brain injury which occurred during birth.(He is buried at Monticello Cemetery in the Ridgley plot.)

Herbert moved his family to Green Switch in 1919. While there, he had two children: H. Forrest and Edith Roberta After moving to Decatur, a third child, Norma Jean was born in 1925. On Sept 17, 1927, Bliss, the children's mother, passed away following an operation for appendicitis. The home was broken up and the children lived with their maternal grandparents (Young's) for a while. Then, Herbert got a housekeeper and lived on his own.

On Sept. 14, 1935, Herbert F. married Ada F. Shulke, the widow of Chas. Shulke. In 1936, they bought the large house of W. S. Ridgly at 1441 W. Macon St., Decatur, IL.

Herbert died in the Woodland Nursing Home, Mount Zion, IL, at 9:10 a.m. on Monday, Sep 13 at age 75. He was buried in the Fairlawn Mausoleum. He leaves his wife, Ada and two daughters: Mrs. William (Edith)Kiser of Decatur, Mrs. L. R. (Norma Jean) Smith of Riverside, California and a son, Forrest of Decatur; brother: Ralph and nephew, Dwight W. Ridgley and niece, Marie Ridgley Bennett.
