Joseph served as a Private with the 10 Michigan Calvary Company-D. He enlisted on February 16, 1865. He was reported absent without leave on July 30, 1865.

Lived in Surry, NH and vicinity until Aug. 14, 1865, when he moved to Grand Rapids, MI, thence to the town of Bowne in that state July 1866, and owned a farm until he died. First a farmer, then owned a saw-mill company with others at Freeport and at Morgan, MI. In Sept. 1887, he entered the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College at Chicago, IL, from which he was graduated Mar. 18, 1890, with the degree of M.D. He practiced his profession in Manistee and Benzie Counties and towns of Morgan, Saginaw and Freeport until he retired. He married Nov. 27, 1866, Lydia Ann Roush, b. Ohio 1840, dau. of John & Mary (Roush) Roush of Pennsylvania. She was residing in Bowne in 1922. They had a dau. Sarah Ann on Oct. 12, 1868.
