French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Jean invented "l'art brut". He translated to mean raw art. He served in the French Air Force during World War II. He started art training when he was 22 years old but gave up art six months later to become a wine merchant in his father's business. He had a successful career as a wine merchant, a career he did not give up completely until he was 46. He married twice. His first marriage was with Paulette Bret. He married Emilie Carlu in 1937. He had a daughter. He became an artistic giant outside of France. He worked in New York and Chicago, and Holland. But France completely rejected his work, calling it outragious. He died of heart failure brought on by emphysema. He was 83 years old. He was buried in a village cemetery in Normandy near the town of Touquet, France.
