Ben Arnold, single, age 26, son of Mrs. M. Arnold, met death by drowning in the waters of Clark lake at Hubert, directly in front of the H. W. Linnemann cottage.
Arnold gave his life to save that of another. Miss Hulda Krueger, employed at the Linnemann cottage, had ventured to swim after practicing with water wings, it is said, and ventured beyond her depth. In her struggles to save herself she clutched a young girl and the latter freed herself.
Arnold leaped in to save Miss Krueger and both sank. Boats were hurriedly sent to the spot and the girl was brought to the surface and revived. Arnold's body was found in water 8 to 12 feet deep and was quickly brought to shore. It is said he had been under water three or four minutes.
Workers endeavored to resuscitate him. Dr. C. S. Reimestad, who had been at Nisswa to attend Judge J. T. Sanborn, was called and did everything possible to save the young man.
A call was sent for the lungmotor at Brainerd and A. A. Arnold and C. E. Hansing left in an automobile and arrived there with the machine which was applied without success.
The body was brought to Brainerd on the night train. Mr. Arnold was born in Brainerd, graduated from the high school and later attended the University of Minnesota, graduating from the law department. He had been clerking in the Arnold store a short time, awaiting a chance to establish himself in law practice.
He is survived by his mother, by three sisters, Rose and Lena, and Mrs. E. O. Webb and two brothers, Will, with the Northern Pacific railway company at St. Paul and Alvin Arnold of Brainerd. He attended the Christian Science church.
The sympathy of the community is extended the bereaved family.
Funeral arrangements were concluded this afternoon. The services will be held at the home of Mrs. M. Arnold, 223 Northeast Fourth avenue, at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. Charles H. Cooper, reader of the Christian Science church, officiating. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 06 July 1916, p. 5, c. 1)
Benjamin E. Arnold, who put his own life at risk to save others, was among those recognized by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission and was posthumously awarded the Carnegie Medal.
