DOMINION HEAD, DIES"
BENJAMIN SHAFFER, 69, president and founder of the Dominion Electric Corp., and a pioneer in the nation's electric appliance field, died unexpectedly of a heart attack shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday while seated in the office of a Mansfield physician.
Mr. Shaffer had been at his desk all day Tuesday until he left to keep his appointment with the physician for a routine medical examination. He was seated in the physician's waiting room when he slumped over in the chair. He was rushed by ambulance to General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Albany, New York, and formed the Dominion Electric Corp., in Winnipeg, Canada. Later the company was moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in 1935 the firm was transferred to Mansfield and Mr. Shaffer came here to make his home.
An active member of the B'nai Jacob Congregation, he was an honorary life member of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Temple Emmanuel, B'nai B'rith, Mansfield Chamber of Commerce and the Advisory Board of the First National Bank.
He was active in civic affairs and frequently contributed to welfare and civic funds.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Shaffer; two sons, Robert Shaffer and Sheldon Shaffer, both of Mansfield; two daughters, Mrs. Charles S. Feinberg of Mansfield and Mrs. John Levinson of Claremont, California; also 8 grandchildren; one brother, Abe Shaffer of Ottawa, Canada; and one sister, Mrs. Jack Wener of Mesa, Arizona.
Funeral services will be conducted at the B'nai Jacob Synagogue Thursday at 2:30 p.m. by Rabbi Avram Hartstein. Interment will be in the B'nai Jacob Cemetery.
Friends may call at the J.H. Finefrock & Sons Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today and until noon Thursday when the body will be removed to the Synagogue on Cook Road at Larchwood Road for the final rites.
In tribute to the memory of the late president, all operations at the Dominion Electric Corp will be closed down at noon on Thursday to permit employees to attend the service.
The family has requested that memorial tributes be made to the Shaffer Memorial Fund of the B'nai Jacob Congregation.
