Civil War veteran - Co. H, 24th Mich. Infantry.

George G. Gordon, son of James Gordon and Agnes Glenn, was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, one of twelve known children and the first of his family to emigrate from Northern Ireland. His known siblings were Jane, Nathaniel, Nancy Agnes, James, Rebecca, William, Robert, John, Margaret, Mary Elisa, and Reese Rosetta.

George's parents, James Gordon and Agnes Glenn, as well as George's eleven siblings, emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1866 aboard the "Maryborough". They disembarked in Brisbane and then went north to settle in the Bowen District on a property they called "Gordon Glen".

Sometime between 1856 and 1859 George emigrated to New York City, New York. It was there, on December 1, 1859, that he became a United States citizen. In about 1869 he moved to Fairgrove Township, Tuscola County, Michigan. He married Ellen Kirk, daughter of Robert Kirk and Sarah Reid and also a County Antrim native, in Vassar, Tuscola County, on April 12, 1869.

George and Ellen had four known children:

1) Sarah Gordon (1870-1924), who married Giles Osgerby;
2) Albert J. Gordon, twin (1878-1879);
3) Robert J. Gordon, twin (1878-1879);
4) John Andrew Gordon (1880-1951), who married Asenath Shanklin.

At the time of the 1910 census, George and Ellen were living with their son John and daughter-in-law Asenath and their children in Fairgrove, Tuscola County, Michigan. Ellen passed away later the same year.

When the 1920 census was taken, George was living with his daughter Sarah and her husband Giles Osgerby in Fairgrove, Tuscola County, Michigan. George passed away in 1929. Both he and Ellen are buried in Brookside Cemetery, Fairgrove, Michigan.

Obituary:

George Gordon, aged 86, died Sunday morning at the home of his son, John Gordon. He had been a resident of Fairgrove for 50 years. He leaves two brothers, Robert and James, one sister, Rosetta of Australia and one son, John. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at the son's home, Rev. I.N. Wilson officiating. Burial was made in Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove.

(Tuscola County Advertiser, May 24, 1929, p.10.)

Notes:

1) Sometime after this memorial was set up in 2011, it was discovered by Australian descendants of George's eleven siblings who, along with their parents James and Agnes (Glenn) Gordon, had emigrated from Northern Ireland to Queensland, Australia in 1866. Communication between the American and Australian family members had broken down after George's death in 1929, and his family's whereabout became a mystery to the Australian branch for many years. This memorial opened new lines of communication that included information about George's siblings so it could subsequently be documented on this website. In 2016 a Gordon family reunion was held in Bowen, Queensland, Australia, where news about finding George and his family was announced.

(Special thanks to Bill Thompson and Richie Wright for photos and information relevant to George's Australian relatives.)

2) The above obituary is inaccurate in reference to George's siblings who were living at the time of his death. His brothers James, Robert, and John were still living in 1929, as were his sisters Rebecca and Mary Elisa. Although the obituary states that George's sister Rosetta survived him, she had passed away in 1919.

3) There is some discrepancy regarding the date of George's immigration. Research done by James Kirk for the Tuscola County Migrations Project reports that George immigrated to the United States about 1856, but no source is provided for that information. On the 1910 census record, George's year of immigration was reported as 1861; on the 1920 record it was reported as 1862.
