James was born to Jurian Westfall and Styntje Kuykendall. He was christened(C:) as Jacobus by a circuit rider from the Kingston Dutch Reformed Church on February 8, 1713. He grew up on Big Minisink Island, which is located along the Delaware River, in Montegue Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. He wed Sophia Van Auken on May 7, 1738, and the marriage was recorded by the Kingston Church. The marriage record stated James was born in the Minisink and residing there. The Kingston Church was responsible for the Minisink until 1741, thus christening of James first two children are shown in the Kingston records.

In 1741, the family moved to Poughkeepsie, New York as the christening of their third child Rustje was recorded by the Dutch Reformed Church of Poughkeepsie. She was named after her grandmother Rustje Dame.

3) Rustje(Rosina), C: 13 Feb 1742

The family moved to Walpack Township in Sussex County, New Jersey sometime between 1742 and 1746 as they were noted in the Walpack Church records. This area is along the Delaware River and about twenty miles south of Port Jervis, New York. Sophia died there in about 1750 as James wed Jannetje Decker in the Walpack Church on February 26, 1751. They had:

In about 1755, the family moved north to Montegue Township as the children's christening is noted in the Machackemack Church records. There they had:

Rosina wed Dirk Van Etten on February 26, 1751, as recorded by the Walpack Church. She named her third child after her brother Petrus and he was a witness at the christening on August 4, 1863. There is no further record of Petrus after this date.

James is buried in an unmarked grave in the Old Minisink Cemetery. It is now part of the Delaware River Water National Park and only a few grave stones remain.
