William enlisted for Civil War service in Company F of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, July 30, 1862, at Wellington, Ohio in Lorain County for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Merchant. Rank attained: Sergeant. He was wounded in left thigh at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia, May 14, 1862. He was transferred to the 4th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, March 27, 1865 and mustered out at Rock Island, Illinois.

Wife: Clara Ann Ayers(1845-1919), who is buried with him.
