WILLIAMSPORT - Dr. William Murray Brish, 92, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of 28 E. Magnolia St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Homewood Retirement Center.

Born Sept. 6, 1906, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late William Wachter and Katherine Devilbiss Brish.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel S. Brish, in 1997.

He was a 1924 graduate of Frederick High School. He received an AB degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1928; a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1932; doctor of Pedagogy Degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1956. He did additional graduate work at George Washington University.

He taught history and science at Thurmont High School from 1928 to 1931 and then taught history at Frederick High School; was principal of Elm Street School in Frederick; was assistant superintendent of schools in Prince George's County, Md.; and was superintendent of schools in Kent County, Md. He was schools superintendent in Washington County from 1947 to 1973.

He was director of MD-WVA Appalachian Educational Satellite Program from 1973 to 1975. He was educational television consultant of Appalachian Regional Commission and the Learning Channel in Washington, D.C. ,from 1976 to 1987.

He was a member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Hagerstown.

He was a Maryland representative for Flying Classroom to Europe; was president of Associated Public School Systems in 1960; was a delegate to Ford Foundation Workshop on Educational Television at Stanford University in 1959. He was educational consultant to India for the Ford Foundation from 1960 to 1961; was educational consultant to Nigeria for the USAID project, Modern Aids to Education from 1963 to 1968. He was delegate to International Educational Television Conference, Center for ETV Overseas in London in 1964; and Ditchley Foundation, International Conference in London in 1966.

He was a member of National Educational Association and Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers; Maryland State Retired Teachers Association and Washington County Retired Teachers Association. He was a past member of the boards of directors of Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce, Washington County Free Library, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Mason-Dixon Council; Boy Scouts of America and received Silver Beaver Award. He was president of Hagerstown Biracial Commission; Hagerstown Rotary Club; and Maryland Christian Endeavor Union.

He was awarded the B.H.S. Alumni Literary Medal-Graduation from High School in 1924; Landis History Award-Graduation Franklin and Marshall College, in 1928; and Tuition Plan Award for Outstanding Service to Education in 1960.

He is survived by three daughters,
Marianne B. Evett of Cleveland, Ohio,
Margaret B. Wagner of Hagerstown and
Marcia B. Shenk of Silver Spring, Md.;
eight grandchildren; and
12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Brish.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Reformed UCC Church, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack D. Cook will officiate.

Burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown; and Saturday following the service at the church.
