Pension application of Archibald Odom (Odum) R7766 fn43NC
Transcribed by Will Graves 10/24/10

State of Georgia Baker County: Before me Samuel W Webb a Justice of the Peace duly authorized by law to administer oaths, personally came to Elizabeth Odom a resident of said County aged 59 years to me well known a credible witness who being first duly sworn according to law upon her solemn oath, says she is the widow of Archibald Odum [sic],
deceased late [of] Pulaski County Georgia. That she was married to said Odum in Wilkinson County Georgia on the 21st day of February 1826 by Elijah Hammock Minister of the Gospel Baptist Preacher, That they lived together as husband and wife from the day of their marriage till the day of his death which took place in Pulaski County Georgia April 1st
1845, That she has not since married and is still his widow '96 now residing in Baker County Georgia. That for many years after he was entitled to a Pension, he refused to apply saying he was able to live without it, and that it was liberty he fought for not for money, That by his first wife he had five children who all died before he did, that he had
grandchildren who were poor, on ope [sic, ? ape?] of whom he was prevailed upon to apply for his Pension a few years before his death. That Esquire Webb drawed his Declaration for him and that Mr. Sullivan Clerk of the Court had done some writing previous but does not think the papers were sent on from Hawkinsville. That after she married said Odum she had often seen his Commissions that he received in the Revolutionary War that he kept his old papers in a Trunk upstairs. That he had a grandson Archibald Odom 3rd who lived with his Grand Papa, who when a little boy went to this old front, and he and the little Negroes used to play with these old papers. That said Grandson raised by them was a nephew of General Duncan L Clinch. That Dr. Archibald Odom, Junior, married Mary Clinch Sister of General D. L. Clinch of U.S.A. That this grandson was allowed to play with these old Commissions who used to be kept in a little silk Bag '96 That the last she recollects seeing these Commissions was in the hands of this Lad and she always expected the Negroes State [sic, took?] the little silk Bag containing them. That she has often heard her husband say that he had served his country six years in the War of the Revolution. That he had been Captain for years in said War. That he was mostly under General Marion. That he was a Baptist Preacher when she married him & continued so to the day of his death. That she has heard him say he joined the Army at sixteen and served to the close of the war except in the early part of said service he left on account of sickness and procured a substitute to enlist in his place.
That she has given to her agent her husband's Freemason Chart dated December 26 1795 wherein he is Master of Lodge 22nd SC and an old letter to his son Dr. Odom, dated 1809
also a leaf from his family Bible of marriages of her deceased husband. That her maiden name was E. Jackson.
