His mother, Sarah married John Wilcox and the family moved to Indian Territory where they worked on the Stokes Ranch in what would later be Washington County, Oklahoma. There he met Clara Johnson, daughter of Harrison and Susan Johnson. Because they were white, they could not be married in Indian Territory. They went by train to Payne County, Oklahoma where they were married on 16 July 1898.
Yank died 39 days before the birth of his daughter, Dora. Clara and Dora moved with her mother, Susan shortly after that. On 8 June 1900 they were living in Catoosa. Dora died two years later on 6 January 1902
