BELLEVILLE - Melvin C. Yoder, 88, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, went to be with the Lord at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Valley View Haven. Born Oct. 3, 1925, in Belleville, he was a son of the late Jonathan Z. and Barbara Y. (Sharp) Yoder.
Surviving are: his children, Thomas R. Yoder, of Ventura, Calif., Melva J. Walters, of Lewistown and Josephine J. Yoder, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters, John L. Yoder, of Belleville, Mary C. Yoder, of Belleville, Ruth Ann Yoder, of Belleville and Lee M. Yoder, of Harrisonburg, Va.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Richard Yoder.
Melvin retired on Nov. 1, 1987, from Belleville Flour Mills, where he served as a route man. In earlier years, he was a truck driver. Melvin was a member of the Locust Grove Mennonite Church. He enjoyed traveling and had visited all 48 of the continental states. He also enjoyed collecting T-shirts, attending auctions and yard sales, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles and he was a great checkers player. His grandchildren considered him a checkers champ. Melvin will be fondly remembered for his big hands, kind heart and quick wit.
A memorial service will be held in his memory at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at the Locust Grove Mennonite Church, with Pastors Max Zook and Jonathan E. Yoder officiating.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at Locust Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Gerald Peachey officiating. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Henderson Funeral Home, Belleville.
