He was born on August 9, 1930 to Anton Lamont and Carrie Evelyn Wilson Nielsen in Schenectady, New York. He attended preparatory schools in Pennsylvania. He married Relda Skinner on June 29, 1956 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. A dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in the West German mission from 1950-53 and held numerous ward and stake positions including branch president, bishop's counselor, priest's quorum advisor, ward chorister, and high councilman.
He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Utah. He completed an internship and residency in psychiatry at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, followed by three years of service in Kitzingen, Germany as a Major in the U.S Medical Corps. From 1966-92 he practiced psychiatry in Salt Lake City.
He was selfless in serving family, friends, and patients. An exemplary husband and father, he enjoyed time with his wife, children and grandchildren, fully supporting their interests in education, music, sports, and recreation. He loved music, opera and drama. His varied hobbies included photography, travel, and languages. His optimism and good humor attracted a wide circle of friends.
Survived by his wife; three sons, and four daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Sherri) Gallagher; Dr. Bradley P. (Rosie) Nielsen; Mrs. M. Truman (Linda) Hunt; Scott; Mrs. Mark (Valerie Jane) Hunsaker; Mr. Gregory L. (Heidi) Nielsen; Emily; and seven grandchildren. Also survived by one brother and three sisters, Mr. R. Douglas (Karen) Nielsen; Mrs. Ellen Bartholomew; Mrs. C. Reed (Kay) Hansen; and Mrs. Ronald L. (Barbara) Schill.
Funeral services Tuesday, April 7th, at 12 noon, East Millcreek 15th Ward, 3750 South Hillside Lane (2500 East). Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the ward on Tuesday, 10:45 - 11:45 am.
Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
