His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, from Centerville, Maryland. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

Carey was "Killed In Action" during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
