Joseph Henry Bottum, Jr

U.S. Senator. He attended the University of South Dakota, (1920-21), graduated from the law school of the University of South Dakota, in 1927, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law. He was South Dakota State Attorney, (1932-36) and director of taxation for the State of South Dakota, (1937-43). In 1961, he was elected as a Republican, the 27th Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota, serving until 1962. He was then appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis Case, serving (1962-63). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was the circuit judge of the South Dakota Seventh Judicial Circuit, serving (1965-80).
