US Congressman, US Senator. Born in Everly, Iowa, he graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University South Dakota, in 1918 and served in World War I as a Private in the U S Marine Corps. After the war, he graduated from Northwestern University Illinois, in 1920 and was assistant editor of the Epworth Herald Chicago, (1920-22). Returning to South Dakota, he was editorial writer on the Rapid City Daily Journal (1922-25), editor- publisher of the Hot Springs (1925-31) and editor-publisher of the Custer Chronicle, (1931-46). In addition, he served as a Major in both the US Army and US Marine Corps Reserves. In 1937, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1951. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1951 and served until his death at age 65 in the naval hospital at Bethesda, Maryland.
