Alvin Joseph Caperton was the son of Martha "Mattie" Matilda Carter and William Thomas Caperton. The family resided in Sebastian County, Arkansas near the community of Bloomer.

December 3, 1916, Alvin married Laura Ruby Carson, also of Sebastian County, Arkansas. He farmed, made camping supplies at Tucker Duck & Rubber Company, and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Fort Bennning, Georgia. Four children were born from their marriage: Naomi Minnie, William Harlan, Dorthea Geneva, and Johnna Faye Caperton.

In 1944, Alvin and Ruby moved to California and established their home in Brea, Orange County. Alvin worked for Douglas Aircraft, and later at Brea-Olinda Union High School. He was an active member of the Church of Christ and was an avid gardener.

Ruby died in 1965. After Ruby's death, Alvin moved to Colorado to be near family. He lived the remainder of his years in Colorado and passed in 1993.
