Annette's family moved to McAlester when she was in junior high and she graduated from McAlester High School. She then attended Oklahoma State University. She married Dr. LeRoi Nelson on Sept. 5, 1943, in Brunswick, Ga. After World War II, when her husband completed his military service, they made their home in McAlester, where they raised three children. She owned and operated The Children's Carousel, a children's clothing store in downtown McAlester. She was a past board member and president of the Youth Emergency Shelter. She was also a 50-year member of PEO and was on the Oklahoma State PEO Projects Fund Committee in 1972 and was a past president of Chapter AP, PEO. She was a lifelong member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in McAlester. She enjoyed reading poetry, cooking, crocheting, sewing and her many good friends. She particularly loved being visited by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She passed away at McAlester Regional Health Center at the age of 89. Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Laffoon, of Norman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Mike and Alexis Nelson, of Muskogee, and Roi and Debbie Nelson, of McAlester. Also, eight grandchildren, Michelle Huffman and husband, Doug, of Tulsa, Shannon Glaser and husband, Dr. Brian, Flower Mound, Texas, Mitch Nelson, of Tulsa, Chris Laffoon and wife, Liz, Los Angeles, Matt Fluegel, of Broken Arrow, Dr. Ryan Nelson and wife, Natalie, of Edmond, Adam Fluegel and wife, Hope, of Glenpool, and Zach Nelson and wife, Melissa, of Broken Arrow, and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. LeRoi Nelson, on Dec. 20, 1973. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 3,2011, at Brumley-Mills Chapel with Dr. Tom Murray officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
