US Congressman. Christopher Columbus Bowen, a Representative from South Carolina, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, January 5, 1832. He attended public schools there and moved to Georgia in 1850. After relocating to Georgia he engaged in agricultural pursuits and also studied law to which he was admitted to the bar in 1862 and commenced practice in Charleston, S.C. During the Civil War Bowen enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a captain in the Coast Guard. After the War he resumed the practice of law in Charleston at which point he became a member of the Republican State convention at Charleston in May 1867. Bowen was first chairman of the Republican State central committee, then a delegate to the State constitutional convention in November 1867. Upon the readmission of South Carolina to representation was he elected as a Republican to the 40th and 41st Congresses and served from July 20, 1868 to March 3, 1871. Bowen was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1870 to the 42nd Congress. He was a member of the S.C. House of Representatives during 1871-1872 and was elected sheriff of Charleston in November 1872. He passed away, June 23, 1880, in New York City.
