Continental Congressman. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he graduated from the Middle Temple, London, England, returned to South Carolina, was admitted to the bar in 1785 and commenced to practice law. In 1786, he was elected to the Second Continental Congressman and served until 1788. After his term, he retuned to his plantation in Charleston, South Carolina and engaged in the cultivation of rice until his death at age 72.
