James was the youngest child of John Vance, an Irish immigrant from Strabane, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, and Rowena Felt Baldwin. 0n 21 January 1891 at the Saint Lewis Catholic Church in Castroville James married Constance Everett Thompson, the daughter of a local Judge. James and Constance went on to have at least 8 children. James was a farmer and also worked in the furniture business. He died of complications of Cancer in a San Antonio hospital.
