US Congressman. Born in Columbia, Tennessee, he graduated from Erskine College North Carolina, in 1876, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1877 and commenced to practice law in Columbia, Tennessee, in 1879. He was a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1899-1901). In 1901, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next ten succeeding Congresses and served until his death in Washington, D.C., at age 66.
