U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Tennessee in 1828, he attended Dresden Academy and was elected Colonel of the Tennessee Militia at age 18. He attended courses at Lexington Law School Kentucky, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Ripley, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1848 and served as a Major of commissary in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he was again a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving (1885-89). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 77.
