Bernardo Houssay was awarded in 1947 with the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for his discovery of the part played by the hormone of the anterior pituitary lobe in the metebolism of sugars. Although Houssay´s major interest was in the endocrine glands and the pituitary, his research produced significant results on the physiology of circulation and respiration, the process of inmunity, the nervous system, digestion, and snake and spider venoms. He was also recognized as an activist leader in the promotion of democracy, education, and scientific research in Argentina.
