US Senator. He attended Southwestern Presbyterian University, Central University Kentucky, Washington and Lee University Virginia, and the University Chattanooga Law School, Tennessee. Graduating from the law department of the University of Virginia, in 1903, he was admitted to the bar in 1903 and began to practice law in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was Chattanooga City Attorney, (1906-08), judge of the circuit court of Hamilton County, (1912-18) and a associate justice of the Supreme Court of Tennessee, (1918-24). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cordell Hull, serving until his death at age 58 in Washington, D.C.
