Actor. Born Cyrus Willard Kendall in St. Louis, Missouri, he was a successful character performer who appeared in over 140 films between 1935 and 1950. With his heavy-set, square-jawed appearance and deep voice, he was perfect for wise guy roles such as policemen, police chiefs, wardens, military officers, bartenders, reporters, and mobsters. His many credits include "Rawhide" (1938), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939), "A Night to Remember" (1943), "Kismet" (1944), "The Cisco Kid Returns" (1945), "Sword of the Avenger" (1948) and "Nancy Goes to Rio" (1950).
