JULES BERCHEM
Born in Paris, France; December 9th 1855 - Died at Oak Park, Ill., January 16th 1930.
At the early age of nine years he was inducted into what was to be his life work---making bronze castings of works of art. He came to Chicago in 1885 and there established himself in his chosen vocation. Though limited in funds his diligence and thrift were soon rewarded by the achievement of both an artistic and a material success. Below are noted a few of the colossal bronze statues erected throughout the nation, which were executed under his hand and direction:
Great lions and 'great lakes' fountain - Art Institute - Chicago
Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument - Indianapolis
Equestrian Statue of Saint Louis - St. Louis
Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument - Des Moines - Iowa
Thatcher Memorial Fountain - Denver
Oak Park-River Forest War Memorial - Oak Park - Ill
Alma Mater Group - Urbana - Ill
He came to be regarded as America's master artisan in art bronze, collaborating with the foremost sculptors in his faithful reproduction of their works. He was most happy when busy with his beloved craft. His kindly and pleasant disposition enabled him to surmount life's obstacles with a smile and endeared him to all with whom he had contact. A lover of nature, he enjoyed the beauty of its storms' fury as much as its days of calm and sunshine.
HE KNEW HIS MAKER AND MASTER.
