TWIN CITY, Ga. - Sidney Mell Bargeron Jr., 79, of Twin City, passed to Glory on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro after losing a courageous battle with cancer.
Visitation will be Friday, April 22, 2011, at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen from 6-8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2011, at the Twin City United Methodist Church with the Revs. Randall Smith and Carter Berkley officiating.
Mr. Bargeron will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Millen Cemetery with the Rev. Christy Bandy and the Rev. Bernie Khaw officiating.
Mr. Bargeron was born and raised near Millen, Jenkins County, Ga., and was a graduate of Millen High School. He was employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 42 years, serving at the National Fish hatcheries in Millen, Ga., Charles City, Va., and Tupelo, Miss. He was the first employee hired by the manager at the Millen Fish Hatchery and returned to the Bo Ginn National Fish Hatchery in Millen in 1979. He had served as assistant manager of both the Tupelo and Millen hatcheries. After retiring in January 1993, he and his wife, Bettye, made their home in Twin City, Ga.
Mr. Bargeron was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for 15 years. He was a past president of the Jenkins County Jaycees. While living in Millen, he was an active member of the Millen United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the administrative board, a Sunday School teacher and the United Methodist Men's president. He always looked forward to helping sell hot dogs and Cokes at the annual Fair on the Square.
After moving to Twin City, Mr. Bargeron became an active member of the Twin City United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Methodist Men's unit. Mr. Bargeron was a past president and director of the Twin City Lions Club, where he helped organize the semi-annual pancake supper project, serving as chairman. The Twin City Lions Club was organized by the Millen Lions. The Lions Club was very special to him and he enjoyed fellowship with his fellow "Lions". He was recently recognized for recruiting the most new members. He was a member of the Sportsman's Club and an avid Georgia Bulldog and E.C.I. Bulldog fan. He enjoyed being a member of the Wednesday Morning Coffee Club.
Mr. Bargeron was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Mell and Julia Waters Bargeron; son, David Mell Bargeron; and brother, Kenneth Bargeron.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth (Bettye) Wheatley Bargeron; sister, Gloria Bargeron of Millen; sister-in-law, Joan Wheatley of Holton, Kan.; a niece, Pamela (Ted) Lutz of Topeka, Kan.; a nephew, Michael (Pam) Wheatley from Barrington, Ill.; a great-niece, Emily Lutz of Topeka, Kan.; aunts, Mrs. Eloise B. Phillips from McCormick, S.C., and Mrs. Murle Crapse of Perkins; an uncle, Robert (Virginia) Waters of DeLand, Fla., and several cousins.
Pallbearers are John Allmond, Charles Stewart, Clark Dixon, Jim Nix, Bill Jines and G.W. Johnson Jr.
Honorary pallbearers are the Twin City Lions Club members and Lannie Seckinger, Edison Harris, Roy Harris, Hank Joyner, Herb Reichelt, Dr. Anthony Davis, Wayne Collins, Stephen Griffin and Jimmy Mincey.
