US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent New York's 17th District in the Thirty-Second Congress, he served from 1851 to his death in office. Buell was born in Fairfield, New York, and was educated at the Academy there. He became prosperous operating a chain of general stores in Herkimer County. Prior to serving in Congress he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1845. He died in Washington, DC from complications of erysipelas. There is a cenotaph for him at Congressional Cemetery.
