My Mom, Gramma, and Thelma all worked in the garment industry. Thelma went on to work for Job Corps as a sewing teacher. She worked with her girls for 30 years before retiring and moving to "God's Country" in Montecito Heights.
She was an active member of the Sweet Adelines Verdugo Hills Chorus during her retirement. I recently learned that she was a choral director with a Washington, D.C. choir before moving to California. Singing, studies say, increases your longevity, and Thelma's 93 years of living support that finding.
Thelma was married to Frederick Davis Bernard (1898-1996) for over 45 years. They were Thelma and Fred for 41 years of my life. They called each other Lee and had the largest circle of friends I've ever witnessed. They never had children, but always had plenty of folks around who did, along with nieces and nephews, Thelma's Job Corps girls, and friends that they made throughout the courses of their lives.
Thelma loved to travel, cook, host parties, and discuss politics and religion. She loved cats (Kototomi, 16, preceded her in death by about six weeks), good wine, Crown Royal, a wide variety of music, good friends, and intelligent conversation. She enjoyed the company of people from all walks of life and remained socially active and up to date until the last few weeks before her death. She was learning to use a computer after years of writing on a word processor, and she was an avid fan of Bill Maher!
Outspoken, sassy, saucy, creative, always fashion forward, and a booster of all of her friends, Thelma will be missed by all who had the immense good fortune to know and love her.
