Bertha L. Burgess, Abingdon Chapel 98, of Abingdon died at 6:52 am Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born on December 26, 1912 in Macomb, the daughter of George and May (Young) Faler. She married Andrew Day in 1932. She later married Ronald Burgess on May 14, 1954 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on October 30, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two infant daughters, Patricia Day and May Louise Day, three adult daughters, Roberta Lankford, Gloria Ratajczak and Alberta Hanson, three sisters and one brother.
Surviving is one daughter, Vonneda (and Jack) Nickels of Peoria; two sons, James (and Norma) Day of Galesburg and Sam Burgess of Abingdon; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.
Bertha was a homemaker and had also worked at Swift and Company in Bushnell and she later worked at the former Severn's Laundromat in Abingdon for seven years. She attended First Assembly of God Church in Abingdon. Bertha played her harmonica at church and for services held at the Care Center. She enjoyed crocheting and won first place awards the past three years at the Abingdon Community Festival.
Graveside service will held at 2:30 pm Saturday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
