THE PASSING OF
PERRY M. YOUNG

He Was Probably the Oldest Living Resident of Decatur and Was Prominent in Business Here for Many Years.

1848 - 1933

Perry M. Young passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Mosier, at 9:30 o’clock last Thursday evening, June 22, 1933. He had been in poor health for the past four years and for several weeks it had been evident that the end was near.

Funeral services were held at the home on West Delaware street at three o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Joseph fox, pastor of the People’s church of Dowagiac, delivered an eloquent and helpful funeral address, and Arba N. Moulton paid a fellow citizen’s tribute to his memory.

The beautiful metal casket was banked with flowers and the spacious home was filled to capacity with relatives and friends. Members of the Eastern Star and Masonic lodges attended in a body.

Rev. Mr. Fox spoke briefly at the grave and then the Masonic burial service was given by Past Master E. B. Scott, acting for the Chaplin, Chas. Ritter.

Perry Marion Young was born in Elkhart, Indiana, November 7, 1848. He was the oldest of seven children of Samuel Bryant and Elizabeth A. Stubbs Young, and the sole survivor of this family.

The family came to Michigan in 1853 and settled in the township of Decatur in Van Buren county. There they lived until 1881 when the father died. The mother died in 1866 and in 1869 Bryant Young married Mrs. Maria A. Henderson. Five children were born to this union. They were William and Nellie Young Yost, twins, now of Los Angles, Calif., Blanch Youells of Chicago, Albert, who passed away a few years ago, and Maud Young Kimble, of Canoga Park, Calif.
Mr. Young was married to Miss Jennie Ball November 24, 1870, and they were parents of two children, Minnie Dell Mosier and Claud. Mrs. Young passed away in 1923 and the next day he went to the home of his daughter to live. The pleasant home which he built on West Delaware street 39 years ago was sold to Matthew Kinney.

At the age of 27 Mr. Young sold his farm and came to the village to live. He worked first in the Buggy Box factory which in the eighties was a thriving Decatur industry, and then formed a partnership with L. T. Rawson in the grain business.

After their partnership was dissolved, he continued to carry on that line of trade and also to handle produce, and he built up a fine business. He sold out about 20 years ago and retired.

Mr. Young was a staunch Republican and active in local politics. He held township and village offices for many years and was a leader in all activities for the public welfare. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge during its prosperous days in Decatur, was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star and a life member of the Masonic Lodge.

His passing removes one of the few remaining citizens of Decatur who were active on the street during the latter part of the last century.

Among those from away who attended the service were Mr. Mrs. Carl Mosier and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Young of Dowagiac, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Youells and Max Young of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Will Phillips of Gull Lake, Mr. and Mrs. John Abrams and Claud Young of Paw Paw, Marquis Young of Ann Arbor and Mrs. Bert Young of Chicago, Mrs. Maggie Stetiner and daughter, Mrs. Frances Reinhart of Cassopolis, Frank Striebel of South Bend, Mrs. Eli Young of Kalamazoo.
