John Mack Carter's parents were Ezekiel Carter 1780 – 1853 and Martha Patsy Stanley 1782 – 1857. His siblings were:
Jacob Carter 1802 – 1858; Daniel B. Carter 1803 – 1876; Joel Carter 1805 – 1866; Judith Carter 1806; Sarah Carter 1807 – 1891; Anna Carter 1810 – 1898; John E. Carter 1813 – 1879; Priscilla Carter 1815 – 1894; Abraham Carter 1818 – 1890; Haley Carter 1819 – 1906; Ezekiel Carter 1822 – 1853; William Carter 1824 – 1894 and Talitha Carter 1826 – 1844.

On May 14, 1843 John Mack Carter married Sarah Morelock. This marriage was blessed with 9 children. They were: Mary Ann E Carter 1844 – 1881; Minerva Jane Carter 1845 – 1921; Mashack James M. Carter 1848 – 1874; Henry C Carter 1850 – 1911; Abraham Newton Carter 1853 – 1900; Nancy N Carter 1855; Judah M Carter 1857 – 1896 and S C Carter 1862 – 1864.

The 1850 census revealed that John Carter was a Farmer in Division 9, Greene, Tennessee. He and his wife had 4 children.

In the 1860 census John and Sarah had 7 children. They were living in District 11, Greene, Tennessee. Post office was Romio. Their was a man in the household by the name of Allen Lewis King, connection to the family unknown.

In 1870 they were living in e. Post office Midway. Only one daughter, Mary was still at home. John was the most prosperous farmer on the page. He declared $6,000.00 in real estate and $2,533.00 in personal property.

In 1880 John and Sarah were still at District 23, Greene, Tennessee. In both the 1870 and 1880 census his neighbors were mostly family.
