Services for Oliver Henry Bell, 95, of Killeen, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Harper-Talasek Chapel.
Oliver died March 13, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Oakalla to Samuel Adam Bell and Millie Elizabeth Whiteley Bell. At a very early age, he started helping his father work in their farm. He attended schools in Oakalla, Okay, Kempner and Brookhaven. As a young man, he cleared brush in the lake area while Buchanan Dam was being built.
Oliver lived most of his life in the Killeen area. He married Effie Mae Brown on Oct. 26, 1938, in Florence and the marriage was performed by the Rev. Hill. After he married, he worked for a short time in a cheese factory in Kennedy.
In 1942, he joined Carpenters Local Union No. 1971 in Temple where he was an active member for more than 50 years. When that local union closed, he transferred his membership to Carpenters Local Union No. 1266 in Austin.
As a carpenter, he helped build the tunnels at West Fort Hood. He worked in Las Vegas on the bomb test site. He also helped build the First National Bank in Killeen, a bank in Lampasas and H-E-B on Gray Street. He did a lot of work at Central Texas Community College.
He was the superintendent on the building of Mid-Town Mall. He worked on many other projects between Lampasas and Temple.
Oliver was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Millie Bell; two brothers, Archie Levi Bell of Killeen and Luther William Bell of Stephenville; three sisters, Bessie Mae McGee of Killeen, Nettie Pearl Curry of Killeen and Willie B. Gray of El Paso.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Effie Mae Bell; a son, Clarence Oliver Bell; a daughter, Alice Marie Bell, all of Killeen; a sister, Beatrice Laverne Shed of Guy; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
