He joined the Vichy government in France, but later switched allegiance and joined up with General Henri Giraud in Algeria, where he helped to prepare for the Allied landings. In August, 1943, he was made French resident-general in Tunisia, by General Charles DeGaulle. In 1947 he was named director of the Institut Des Hautes Etudes De Defense Nationale in Paris. In 1949 Mast's career came to a standstill when he was accused of informing the Vietminh of France's deteriorating position in Vietnam. In 1969 he wrote, "Histoire D'une Rebellion."
