French Army Officer. He led a stormy career in French military politics and became a specialist on East Asian Affairs. During World War II he was captured by the Germans, but was later released. He joined the Vichy government in France, but later switched allegiance and joined up with General Henri Giraud in Algeria, where he helped to prepare for the Allied landings. In August, 1943, he was made French resident-general in Tunisia, by General Charles DeGaulle. In 1947 he was named director of the Institut Des Hautes Etudes De Defense Nationale in Paris. In 1949 Mast's career came to a standstill when he was accused of informing the Vietminh of France's deteriorating position in Vietnam. In 1969 he wrote, "Histoire D'une Rebellion."
