US Congressman. He attended the public schools of Groton and pursued a career in the mercantile business. During the War of 1812, he was a major in the Eighth Connecticut Regiment with the responsibility of defending the coastal towns during the British Fleet's blockade. Entering politics after the war, he was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1818. He served in the Nineteenth through the Twenty-third Congress of the United States (March 4, 1821 through March 3, 1835). He was an unsuccessful candidate to the Twenty-fourth Congress in 1834 and resumed his mercantile business. He had two nephews that also served as Representatives to the United States Congress.
