Former Grants Pass resident Walter J. Deetz, 83, of Salem died Nov. 24, 2006, in Salem.

A memorial service will be held a 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ridge Valley, Pa.

Deetz was born April 11, 1923, in Allentown, Pa. In February 1944, he married Doris Kocher, who died in 2004. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. After his military service, he worked as an independent contractor. Following his retirement, he supervised the construction and renovation of churches in the United States and St. Petersburg, Russia, on behalf of the Lutheran Church.

In 1963, he moved his family to Grants Pass. He and his wife later moved to Salem to be near their children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Walter of Cancun, Mexico, Dennis of Salem, and William of Barnegat, N.J.; two daughters, Debi Williams of Salem, and Robin of San Diego; two brothers, Frederick of Hatfield, Pa., and Donald of Ridge Valley, Pa.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
