John was the son of William H. Shaffar and Sarah Ann Fee Shaffar and the husband of Julania Jane Hazeltine Shaffar.

John was born a few miles north of Center Point, IA. He was more familiarly known as "Bud". "Bud" was part of the community. No man can live in one community for so many years and not have much to do in the progress and development of that place. Strong men put the ax to the trees and cleared the land that became farms, rich in production. "Bud" Shaffer (sic) was one of those men - and he leaves behind him many acres of tillable land that were made so by his ax. He may not have owned these acres - but he made these acres - which became the nucleus of productive farms. To such men we owe our fondest respect. (Biographical information was extracted from his obituary in the "Center Point Independant", Sept. 23, 1937.)

Note: The Shaffar name was sometimes spelled "Shaffer".
