U.S. Congressman. He taught school (1894-99), graduated from the University of Nebraska, College of Law in 1900, was admitted to the bar in 1901 and began a law practice in Morrill, Kansas. In addition, he engaged in agricultural pursuits (1901-52). In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress, serving until 1955. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law and resumed his farming activities. He also is the only Democrat in history to represent Kansas' 1st Congressional District.
