John enlisted for Civil War service as a private in Company H of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, July 24, 1865, at Elyria, OH(Lorain County), for a term of 3 months. Occupation: Farmer. He was mustered out with Company H, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, NC. His name is on the Eaton Twp. Civil War monument located in Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Lorain County, Ohio.

The 1850 U.S. Census for Brunswick Twp. in Medina county listed him as 9 years old, residing with his father, William, 35, a farmer, born in Ireland, and mother, Eliza, 32, born in New York State. His siblings were: James, 5, Robert W., and Eliza, 3, all born in Ohio. The 1860 U.S. Census showed him living in Eaton Twp., Lorain County, Ohio, in the household of Benjamin Hesly, 37, a farmer, born in New York State as was his wife, Cynthia, 38. They had a daughter, Emeline, 2, born in Ohio. An Earl Sally, 24, born in New York State was listed as hdlp and John Warnock, 19, was shown as a farm laborer. In the 1880 U.S. Census, John is shown living in Ridgeville Twp. Lorain County, 39, a widower farmer. Also in the household is Mabel, 9, her relationship is illegible, born in Ohio, and a Mary A. Smith, a servant, 28, keeping house, born in Ohio.

An inscription on the west side of the cemetery monument which is badly weathered, showed a Naomi Warnock, who may have been John's wife, daughter of T. and J. Cave, possibly died May 15, 1873, at 37 years and 7 months of age.

To confuse matters there was a pension for minor, John McNelly, April 20, 1887 which was issued as Certificate #273033 in Ohio. It is unclear as to the identify of John McNelly.

Additional information might be found in his military and especially seperate pension file copies available for exorbitant cost from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
