Charles was the son of Joseph Davis and Sarah Phillips Davis. He was born near Princeton in what was then Hunterdon County, NJ. At age 15 he went by wagon to Wheeling, WVA and by flatboat to Cincinnati, which in 1814 was a town of 500 or less. He spent a year in Troy, OH, returned to NJ, traveled around PA, MD, DE, and VA before returning to Troy. In 1818 he was off on the first of 9 trips to New Orleans on a flatboat. He was married in 1822 in Troy, OH where, at some point he purchased 105 acres of farmland. He made his last flatboat trip in 1830 and returned to farming. In 1835 he came to Thorntown, Boone Co., IN by way of Rushville and Indianapolis. He started a general store in Thorntown in 1836 but it was "not agreeable to his taste" so he returned to farming in 1840. In 1864 he retired, moved to Lebanon and built his house, shown in the picture. Biographical information was extracted from articles in "The Patriot" (Lebanon, Jan. 30, 1890) and "Lebanon Pioneer" (June 19, 1890).

The cemetery was originally named "Higgins Cemetery". Later the cemetery was called the "Precinct Cemetery", and finally the "Bethel Hill Cemetery." Directions to Bethel Hill Cemetery: From Lebanon, IN go north on US 52. On County Highway 650N go east 1.3 miles to the cemetery.
