US Congressman, US Senator, Mexican War Army Officer. Served in the United States Army during the Mexican War as a Major in the Illinois Volunteers. He was twice was elected to represent Illinois 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1847 to 1856 (having been elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Stephen Douglas), then from 1861 to 1863. Unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Illinois in 1856, but served as Governor of the Nebraska Territory in 1858. He was elected as a Senator from Illinois to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Stephen Douglas, and took over the seat from Senator Orville H. Browning, who filled it in the interim. He served in the Senate from 1863 to 1865.
